Default Ranger / ?

Hello, I have had the game about a week and want to start leveling a Ranger, but I cant decide what 2nd profession to take.

Could you please give me some advice? I have read the stickied guide, and also PvXwiki but still have little idea what are solid secondary choices.

I am going to be doing PvE mostly and possibly PvP later if I can, I really havent gotten that far into the game yet.

So can you tell me what you would pick if you were making a new Ranger and why?

Thanks for your time

Well, starting out, Monk, although stereotypical, is a nice choice for a first secondary simply because of the hard (reusable) resurrection skill, but if you have factions, go RITUALIST secondary.

Personally, I use Necromancer or Ritualist as my secondary. Ritualist also has hard res skills, and weapon spells are incredible when used in synergy with a ranger. Necromancer secondary... I talk too much about Necromancers as it is and no one agrees with me about them anyway. Suffice to say there are many options.

Elementalist as a secondary for Rangers has high damage implications (conjure, rodgort archers, etc.) See Charr for reference, heh.

Warrior secondary allows you to take advantage of the legendary "thumper" style. Ranger using warrior's weapons. Loads of fun and fairly reliable.

For PvE, /Me or /Rt - [[epidemic] (combined with skills like [[broad head arrow] and [[poison tip signet]), or [[splinter weapon] (with [[volley] [or [[barrage] if you want to waste your elite]) are near enough the strongest secondary skills you can bring.

For PvP, /Mo all the way for a general archer, because [[mending touch] is win.

just know that you will be able to switch your seconday later. a ranger can benefit from every secondary so you won't really be able to make a wrong choice.

Start with /Mo for Rebirth and Mending Touch. Later on once your used to the game and the mechanics of a Ranger, you can switch to /Rt or /Me.

[rebirth]
[mending touch]

The optimal choice for both PvE and PvP is a Monk secondary profession. Not only does it open up opprotunities to become a runner in PvE, the skill selection that you can choose will also greatly increase your survivability in both aspects.

Yeah I got my Prophecies Ranger to Factions and changed him to a Ritualist as soon as I got the expansion and i think it works very well.

Splinter Weapon is cheap and fast to cast and I use a spirit often for health regen.

Splinter weapon is a solid build. For fun you can do a /N and go with a touch ranger build.. (..). You can blast through all the storylines with a touch ranger but you MUST capture Offering of Blood or the build is worthless. A /W is fun if you want to go with a bunny thumper build.

Mending Touch isn't that great in PvE (tho because I like using the WoR necro or a RC monk) and there are better (hard-)resses then rebirth ([[Death Pact Signet] or [[Flesh of my flesh] mainly)

/mo lets you bring [healing breeze]

I would go with /rt . You can use [splinter weapon][volley] and you still get to use [broad head arrow] for whenever you need it. Epidemic can be put on a hero most of the time, although its not going to be as good as a player using it. I dont think theres many situations whres it necessary to have [epidemic] on the player bar.

healing breeze=terrible
i usually bring rebirth in pugs because they tend to wipe and rangers have high survivability

[skill]Mending Touch[/skill] should be on your bar as much as possible if you play R/Mo since in PvE you will always come across some conditions. The common one is bleeding inflicted by melee enemies but the most damaging is probably blindness. A blinded Ranger who can't remove it is essentially shut down and useless to the group. Atleast if your burning, diseased or bleeding you can still deal damage or interupt enemies.

[skill]Splinter Weapon[/skill] is the skill you should carry if you take the R/Rt path as it will allow you to unleash major damage to mobs when combined with [skill]Barrage[/skill] or [skill]Volley[/skill]. And if you decide to go with volley then i suggest using [skill]Broad Head Arrow[/skill] or [skill]Escape[/skill] for the elite skill slot.

[skill]Epidemic[/skill] is really the only good skill to take if you go the R/Me route and it doesn't need attribute points put into any Mesmer specific attributes either. It's a low energy cost skill that works really well to spread conditions throughout a mob of enemies. Good condition causing skills like [skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Broad Head Arrow[/skill][skill]Burning Arrow[/skill][skill]Barbed Arrows[/skill] should be used.

It's handy to have to remove blind, instead of waiting on a hench/hero monk to remove it.

Quick question...if I do not have Prophecies (yet!), is Rodgort's available to me? I have Factions and EotN.

I'm assuming you mean mark of rodgorts. And no, its a prophecies only skill, and kind of subpar.
